There's no doubt that the onset of cooler temperatures and the fewer hours of sunlight bring with them a new set of hair and skin demands. Snow, rain, and icy cold make hair brittle and dry. Did you know indoor heating can be as damaging as spending the afternoon under a hair dryer? From split ends to dry frizz, static electricity to hat hair, when it hits, a bad winter hair day can last for months.Whether you're indoors or out, winter's wrath is unavoidable. The seasons can play havoc with our tresses, but as long as you adapt your hair care you'll beat the winter hair blues. Prevention Is Better Than A Cure
Winter Woes Hair Tips: Remember - It's a lot easier to protect, condition and maintain healthy hair than it is to try to rectify damage caused by mistreatment and harsh winter weather. Leave-in conditioners and protective oils: These act as a cozy coat between your hair and the heat. During the cold dryness of the winter months, damage from a curling or straightening iron can be worse than usual. If you're straightening out or curling up, coat your hair with a leave-in oil, such as Design Essentials Silk Essentials a Thermal Strengthening Serum that provides immense shine while sealing the cuticle and locking moisture into the hair during thermal styling. After you rinse out your conditioner, apply a moisturizing leave-in conditioner for an extra boost of hydration. A great one is Design Essentials Hydrate a Leave in Hydrating conditioner. It's a cream base leave in conditioner that revitalizes and moisturizes dry thirsty hair. Moisture is designed to add elasticity to the hair strand so when it is combed or brushed, it will stretch and return to its natural position, thereby reducing and eliminating breakage. Design Essentials Hydrate used regularly on dry hair will help that hair maintain moisture during the harsh winter conditions. The right leave-in conditioner will continue working for a long time after you've applied it. Stay moisturized: Ultimately we moisturize our skin more in the winter and hair and scalp is no exception. When your skin feels dry, you slather on moisturizers. Do the same for your hair and scalp. A personalized cocktailed conditioning treatment that is created just for you might be just what you need. When you come in to see us for you fix, ask about personalized moisturizing conditioning treatments for hair and scalp. This is a great way to keep your hair healthy and shiny in the winter months. Indulging in a conditioning treatment is especially important for women as their hair tends to be longer than men's so can be prone to breaking, splitting and drying out. Keeping your hair nourished will protect it from the weather conditions and heat styling. Winter affects as our skin as well as our scalps. Keep them both healthy with a Wash House Experience. You get exfoliation with with a raw sugar scrub and or lemon, heat treatment and fresh water rinse. UVA/UBV Protection: In the winter it is just as important to stay protected from the sun as it is in the summer. Remember to use products that are UVA/UVB protected. Nothing wrong with using the Paul Mitchell Sun during the winter months as well. Stay Trim: Trimming your hair regularly is essential in winter to avoid split ends and will strengthen your hair. Hair looks far healthier if it's kept neat and trimmed, and even if you're growing your hair, you should still have regular trims. We recommend having a trim every 8-10 weeks. (Depending on your growth and maintenance) Protect: Wear a hat or head scarf. Not only will this protect your hair from the harsh weather, but it will stop the wind sending your hair into a tangled mess en route to the office. Apply a couple of drops of serum to the ends such as Paul Mitchel Super Skinny Serum, Awaphui Wild Ginger Keratin or Brazilian Blowout Dry Oil Infused Dry Oil Treatment Oil. All products are also considered leave in conditioners as well as providing a healthy shine that helps to avoid static frizz -- particularly important when taking hats on and off to beat the winter blues. Dr.'s Corner- Camille I. Roberts, M.D. Winter Skin Care Just as your hair needs to be protected for the elements in the winter, so does your skin. Using a milder, more moisturizing soap, Tea Tree Body Bar and Mitch Agave Body Bar, in the shower or bath is a good first step e.g. Hempz Shower Gel, Dove (sensitive skin) soap or Oil of Olay body washes. Next comes the most important part...moisturizing your skin right after showering or bathing. My favorites are CeraVe cream, Aveeno Skin Relief cream, Cetaphil cream and Eucerin cream or Hempz Body Souffle' or Hempz Body Butter. This will replace the moisture barrier of your skin that will help to protect it from the elements. For those particularly dry areas like the elbows, knees and heels try CeraVe Renewing SA cream daily. Hands also should be re-moisturized after washing. Keeping moisturizing lotions by the sink or at your desk may be helpful e.g. CeraVe Hand Cream. Individuals with sensitive skin should avoid scented products. Those with eczema may have more issues or concerns in the winter and may need to see a dermatologist. Dr. Camille I.
